The Yankees needed a new bench coach after previous bench coach Carlos Mendoza left to take the Mets manager job.
The Yankees hired Brad Ausmus to be their bench coach, reports Joel Sherman of the New York Post. The position was left vacant when Carlos Mendoza was hired away to be the manager of the Mets.
According to Heyman, the former big league catcher is looking to find a front office position instead.
Ausmus will return to the dugout in Oakland.
Along with Ausmus, Rangers player development field coordinator Jayce Tingler and former Rangers manager/current Braves third base coach Ron Washington are reportedly among the Padres’ candidates. But it’s not clear whether they’ve interviewed anyone other than Ausmus yet.
Besides this helpful bit of historical perspective, it’s pertinent to note that Ausmus was relaying this experience in response to questions surrounding his own, current job security with Los Angeles.
In the high-demand, ever-changing world of coaching in professional sports, it's a fair assessment that every head coaching job is a temporary one. The window to show and prove is quick and short, and in the wide-open terrain of Major League Baseball, that is especially true.
